In Their Words:
In need of a good night’s sleep so you can wake up feeling refreshed? Look no further than ZzzQuil™ Sleep-Aid Products. But how does ZzzQuil work—and how should this medication be taken?
Although ZzzQuil is brought to you by the makers of Vicks® NyQuil®, it’s not for colds. It’s not for pain. It’s just for sleep.
ZzzQuil contains diphenhydramine HCI, which is a big word for a small compound that helps you sleep. To help you stay awake and alert, your body produces histamine, a naturally occurring substance that interacts with receptors in your brain to promote wakefulness. Diphenhydramine acts as an antihistamine, which blocks your brain’s alertness to make you feel the opposite: drowsy.1
Studies have shown that diphenhydramine relieves occasional sleeplessness when used as directed, by reducing the time it takes for you to fall asleep so you feel rested in the morning.2
The other great news about diphenhydramine? For more than 30 years, diphenhydramine has been approved by the FDA as an OTC (over-the-counter) medicine to treat occasional sleeplessness.3 Plus, diphenhydramine is non-habit-forming.
I always try to be honest with my readers but show the good points of a product at the same time. In saying that my family had some really bad side effects with this product and I asked the company if they still wanted me to write a review in light of this and they did so here it is.
Both my husband and myself sometimes have trouble sleeping and we had heard about ZzzQuil we were both excited to try it.
My husband took it first and the first night it woke me up because he was walking around the house. I realized pretty soon that he was sleep walking, which he has never done. Took me awhile to get him back to bed. The next morning he said he didn’t remember any of that but he had horrible nightmares all night which made him wake up tried.
He took it again a few nights later not thinking that it was the ZzzQuil that gave him the side affects. That night I woke up to him coughing very loudly. He didn’t stop for at least 5 minutes. The next day he said he couldn’t get a funny oily taste out of his month. He felt ok but we couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him. We finally put it together that he had slept walked again and picked up furniture polish and drank some. It was left out from cleaning. I was scared to death.
I have since looked up other reviews online and other people have reported sleepwalking, nightmares, and hallucinations also. Although some people have done fine taking it. I would just be very careful.
Have you used Zzzquil?
